Careers - Sheet Metal Roofing

What is Sheet Metal Roofing?

Every structure needs a roof, but a roof is more than just a top for a finished building. A roof is actually a system designed to do the following tasks:

  • Direct rainwater to gutters and downspouts
  • Keep heated and cooled air inside structures
  • Support rooftop machinery (for example, vents, air conditioning units)
  • Withstand most weather conditions, including wind and hail

In this field, you will work outdoors, on commercial roofing systems. In your classroom work and on-the-job training, you will focus on methods and equipment designed to keep you safe. You will also learn about the different types of low slope roofing systems including Built up roofs, Modified Bitumen Roof Membranes and single ply membranes. You will also study other types of roofing designs such as green roof systems.

Careers in this field include:

  • Job superintendent
  • Foreman
  • Estimator
  • Installer
  • Safety and risk manager

Student Manuals

ITI's approach to instruction enables apprentices to learn at their own pace and in the way that suits them best. Because some individuals learn best by reading, others by seeing and still others by hearing—ITI's instructional materials include written manuals as well CDs with audio and visual presentations. ITI's Roofing Curriculum includes seven specific student manuals covering: Built-Up Roofing; Common Topics; Single-Ply Roofing; Decks, Insulation, and Drainage; Repair, Maintenance, and Re-Roofing; Tools and Equipment; Hazards in Commercial Roofing.

Job Sheets & CDs

Job Sheets and CDs related to the contents of the seven standard Roofing Manuals included in ITI's Roofing Curriculum encourage apprentices to take advantage of self-paced learning. CDs and Job Sheets review classroom material and enable apprentices to reinforce classroom training or strengthen their understanding by answering self-administered questions. When bad weather takes crews out of the field, contractors can use these materials to augment classroom training and on-the-job experience instead of just sending crews home.
