Contest History

In 1971, the National Training Fund was established for the three-fold purpose of increasing productivity, increasing employment opportunities, and assuring constant modernization of work methods.

For the first time during the history of National Apprentice Contests, funding became available so that future contests could be held in actual live competition. In recognition of the past experience and dedication of the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, the National Training Fund trustees appointed that committee to run the first "live" industry contest for the fourth year apprentices in 1973. The success of that contest in attracting interest and arousing enthusiasm throughout the industry led the National Training Fund to expand the live contest in 1974 to include first, second, and third year apprentices, as well as those serving their fourth year apprenticeships.

In 2006, with the adoption of modular training, contestants competed in one of three specialty areas - HVAC, TAB, or Industrial Welding versus 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year apprentice competitions. In 2007, Architectural and Service competitions were added to the International Contest.

In 2010, Regional Contests were eliminated and all eligible apprentices competed in Las Vegas for the top honors in their discipline. In 2011, the competition introduced the Detailing category for journeymen. This was the first year journeymen were allowed to compete in the International Sheet Metal Contest.
